ST. LOUIS (OSV News) — Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen — the 20th-century theologian, evangelizer, Catholic communications pioneer, teacher and preacher — is now Blessed Fulton J. Sheen.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a pro-prefect for the Holy See’s Dicastery for Evangelization and papal delegate, pronounced the Church’s declaration on Archbishop Sheen’s holiness of life and witness to Jesus Christ at a Sept. 24 Mass celebrated in The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis.

To the applause of pilgrims, Cardinal Tagle described Archbishop Sheen as a “son of Illinois, son of the United States of America” and “indeed, son of the world.”

In the United States, we can’t help but be reminded of the European roots of the Catholic Church. But I’d like to look at a wider and more recent era in the life of the Church—the emergence of, as Karl Rahner called it, a “world Church.” This is not a Church whose center is Rome or Europe, or for that matter the West. It is a Church without a center—inculturated into the language, history, and culture of every corner of the globe; and rooted not in the centers of power or privilege, but in the world of the poor.

Priesthood is “the most joyous profession there can be” and there is “nothing more fulfilling than to be Jesus’ mouthpiece,” 97-year-old Cardinal Ernest Simoni of Albania has said.

Speaking to The Tablet at Ireland’s national seminary in Maynooth, the cardinal said he wanted the seminarians studying for priesthood to “go forth and tell anybody and everybody who will listen that Jesus gave his life for us”.

Through an interpreter, Cardinal Simoni told the Tablet, “I want the world to see and take example from these seminarians here in Ireland who are taking the word of God forwards and onwards to other people.

“I feel Ireland is the shield of Catholicism in Europe and throughout the world and I hope the [seminarians] can keep that flame going.”
