A married Catholic priest’s lessons from two kinds of fatherhood

  1. A new thought occurred to me: Isn't the time right for priests to lead the church as good examples of sacred, loving, holy marriage and family?

I am a retired teacher and now serve as a professional Catholic chaplain. Experience has demonstrated the multitude of ways that family life is threatened and suffers in our current social milieu. As a Chicagoan, I understand that violence is an acute problem in impoverished areas, due in large part to street gangs. Gangs impersonate family for young boys from unstable home environments typically led by single mothers who themselves suffer from effects of traumatic stress.

Single motherhood became one solution to poverty during the early stages of the new welfare system during urban renewal in the 1960's. Young oppressed women found they could gain, not only extra income, but status within their welfare culture simply by becoming pregnant by one of those fantastically "successful" (having money) young boy gangsters. This social system was so successful, by material standards, that we find ourselves enmeshed and controlled by this existential system today (Black Lives Matter).

My prayer is that the Holy Spirit guides humanity (please Lord, include the church!) into allowing priests to marry and create a new world through the blessings demonstrated by happy, holy true fatherhood. Please Lord, allow priests to marry women who can be courageous partners to create loving, happy and holy families. God, we need your priests for this purpose. Show us how to love again, how to parent children, how to make good judgements in life that place love above materialism, how to find love in unity and care for the family above consumerism. Amen.
