The roots of the bishop’s craven alliances are long and deep with much amelioration when most Roman Catholics in this country were themselves immigrants from Europe and industrial workers, not owners. Given narrow episcopal commitments of the bishops within the United States to narrow area of life and sexual ethics, the Republican party found a suppliant episcopate with a cause that would cost their supporters nothing. Given Church dependence on state finance in Italy and Germany, there was an apparent cause to secure accustomed state financial support for clergy and schools. Today, It is not so much that Catholic students deserve some support for their education, which many do get in universities, but the inability to distinguish sound and moral integrity – honesty, mercy, concern for the common man - from the lesser in private and public behavior. These judgement place the basic Christian efforts of clergy, sisters and laypeople at great risk.
ReplyDeleteThere has not been a greater challenge to the integrity of this nation – “indivisible with liberty and justice for all” – since the Civil War. Some call this a war, while we have come to learn the ineffectiveness of soldiers, AK-47’s, jets, and nuclear weapons in this war. With the strengths of a civil democracy being recklessly abandoned in the name of so called private interests, without respect for the commonwealth or common good, we are paying an enormous price in lives and living.

So, what is at the heart of the Gospels, whichever part you may hear or want to read?
Let us be clear, the leaders should be held accountable by the prophets of today and yet to come.

Cardinal Dolan,
I cannot tell you who to like (schmooze with) politically, however knowing that the Roman Catholic Church enjoys a tax-exempt status, please do not publicly endorse/support any political person or party. You run the risk of jeopardizing the Catholic Church tax-exempt status and the trust of faithful-to-the-truth Catholics by abusing your position/obligation to all of the people of god when you promote the absurdity of certain political “elected” officials.
As for our gay, transgender, right to choose and female family members, where does your rightessness come from? Obviously, you do not know this is the 21st century and there are great insights, awarenesses and information available today and the prejudices and ignorance of the past are no longer an excuse to exclude/control anyone or try to be the conscience of another.
Humility is another quality we all might be more in tune with. Wow, being the lead-off batter in these times of no baseball must be a real HIGH for anyone.
