Cardinal says a woman's place is in the home

THE TABLET

Manuel Monteiro de Castro, 73, who was made a cardinal earlier this month, has caused controversy in Portugal saying that, first and foremost, a woman's place is at home looking after her children.
When asked what he thought of the economic and social problems Portugal is facing he declared last week that the greatest problem in Portugal - where half the workforce is female and often two salaries are needed to make ends meet - was the lack of support the Government gave the family.
"The woman should stay at home, or if she works outside the home, it should be only part-time, so that she can dedicate herself to her essential function which is to bring up the children," he said.

  1. I understand that you probably don't speak Portuguese, so I call your attention to this post which explains the matter fully.

By reprinting The Tablet's article, you are doing a grave disservice to the Cardinal and to truth.
