(OSV News) — When Jesuit Father Robert Spitzer realized a number of young Catholics were abandoning their faith in the name of science, he decided to do something about it: Create a new study Bible.
“We have a lot of young people who are leaving our church unnecessarily,” said Father Spitzer, author of “Science, Reason, and Faith: Catholic Study Bible,” a book published by Our Sunday Visitor (the parent company of OSV News) over the summer. “They think that faith and science are contradictory.”

It is 7 a.m. Sunday morning in Blue Ash, Ohio. Six hundred fifty people—old and young, mostly from faith communities, all holding protest pickets—are lining both sides of the road outside of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement administrative office. It is already humid and getting hot. Why are we even bothering? I wonder. Do these people really think any good will come of our protest against the deportation of Haitian immigrants? Is this just another exercise in liberal guilt? These questions are on my mind as I find my place of protest, off the street, on the grass. Police are watching, we’re told by our green-vested field marshals. We’re not allowed on the street.

A briefing note from the Iona Institute, a Christian advocacy and research body, says falling births and the rise of secularism are the two driving causes of the decline, with the drop in birth rates accounting for approximately 60 percent of the decrease.
In the ten year period which the research looks at, it was also shown that births in the Republic of Ireland have fallen by 19.9 percent, and 21.3 percent in Northern Ireland. Overall, this is a decline of 18.8 percent.
The report said the “biggest part of the decline [in baptisms] is accounted for by a fall in the number of births overall.”
