Cardinal takes on CDF head

Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima has stated the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) is "wrong" in adopting a friendly approach to liberation theology.
Peru's most senior cleric was responding to statements reported earlier this month by Archbishop Gerhard Müller that it was important to establish reconciliation between the Vatican and liberation theology.
In response, the cardinal stated: "I think he has got it wrong. Archbishop Müller's job is to defend the sound doctrine of the Catholic faith so he should stop being naive."
Müller is a friend of Fr Gustavo Gutierrez, one of the founders of liberation theology, and they co-wrote On the Side of the Poor: Liberation Theology, Theology of the Church.
Cardinal Cipriani also disputed Archbishop Müller's assertion that Pope Francis supported the radical movement. Liberation theology retains popularity in South America, where it originated. Pope John Paul II sought to neutralise the movement during the 1980s because it was perceived to be too political.
